Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) conducted a series of stakeholder consultative meetings in all the three regions of Malawi. The meetings were aimed at soliciting views from various stakeholders in the education sector on how best to decentralize the services of HESLGB.
The stakeholder consultative meetings were held at Sunbird Capital Hotel on 10th November, 2017, Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel on 20th December, 2017, and Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel on 18th January, 2018.

On 7th of December, 2017 the Daily Times published an article titled “The moral imperative of quality education” which was written by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, the State President of the Republic of Malawi. In the said article, the State President emphasized on the importance of education in overcoming economic, social and health challenges that Malawi and other developing countries face. He further highlighted some of the initiatives that the Government of Malawi is undertaking in its efforts to improve quality and access to education. He also made a call to international partners to support the Malawi education sector in dealing with the challenges of quality and access to education for all Malawians. CLICK TO READ FULL ARTICLE.
In November 2017 the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development released the results of the Integrated Household Survey (IHS4) which was conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) from April 2016 to April 2017. The survey is used as a tool for monitor and evaluate the changing conditions of Malawian households so as to inform planning and policy development.
The survey focused on a number of indicators which included health, demographic characteristics, health, education, household enterprises, consumption and asset ownership, agriculture and housing infrastructure. But of interest for this entry are the findings of the survey on education. The survey revealed that when it comes to attainment of qualifications, on average, 70 percent of the population in Malawi had not attained any qualification. It further showed that a higher proportion of household members attained primary school leaving certificate compared to the higher levels of education. To fulfil this mandate and to ensure sustainability of the support to needy students, HESLGB was empowered by the HESLGB Act to recover old students’ loans so as to become a self-sustaining students’ loans revolving fund to sustainably support current and future needy and deserving students pursuing higher education in Malawi.
Key to the realization of this self-sustaining revolving fund are all former University of Malawi (UNIMA) and Mzuzu University (Mzuni) students who benefited from student loan schemes from 1985 to date. These former beneficiaries are key because they have a legal duty to pay back the loans that they were granted for tuition, upkeep or stationery. Click to Read the full article.
