Be part of the solution

We are living in an era where people are becoming very active in participation in the social, political and economic activities of our society. One of the tools that is popularly being used to enhance participation in these matters is the social media. The social media has given people the platform to voice out opinions, discuss issues, organize around causes and influence change.

Unfortunately, the social media has also provided a space for people to complain on various issues without offering any solutions. For example, we have a lot of graduates who complain on social media that government is not doing enough to support needy students to access higher education. Sadly, if we are to check the background of some of these graduates, we will discover that they benefited from student loans and they are yet to repay their loans.

One thing that should be noted is that the problem of inadequate resources for funding needy students to access higher education can be dealt with by creating a revolving fund, which is only possible if each and every former loan beneficiary repays his or her loan. Former loan beneficiaries can be part of this solution by following three simple steps. Click to read full article.

Human resource management is one of the most strategic departments of each company/organization. This department is important because it deals with the process of employing, training, compensating, and developing strategies to retain people. Additionally, the department is involved in development of policies and in so doing it is imperative that human resources managers must be aware of all laws that directly or indirectly affect the workplace.

Considering that the legal environment is always changing, human resource managers must always be aware of changes taking place and then communicate the same to the entire management of the company/organization. This gist of this entry is to provide human resources managers with general information about recovery of student loans and explain their legal duties as stipulated in Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) Act number 2 of 2015. Do not deny needy students their right to education

Since 1985/86 financial year, the Government of Malawi has been supporting university students with loans through the student loan schemes. The student loan schemes were introduced to enable students with poor family background to access higher education without burdens.  The reasoning behind the student loan schemes was that needy students who will be supported with a loan will be required to pay back the loans so that other students also benefit from the same scheme.

However, for a number of years, there were no proper structures and mechanisms to facilitate repayment of these loans. Resultantly, former beneficiaries of the loans had nowhere to repay the loans. This, therefore, made it hard for the Malawi government to recover the loans.

Having realized the challenges that were involved in management of the student loan schemes, government through an Act of Parliament established the Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB). HESLGB was established with two core mandates; to annually provide loans and grants to needy and deserving students and to facilitate recovery of all outstanding loans from former beneficiaries of student loan schemes. Revolutionizing higher education financing

Studies indicate that higher education is very critical for the development of every country. This is the case because higher education enables individuals to unleash their potential for discovering new innovation for social, political and economic development. Although this is the case, the higher education sector faces multiple challenges that requires collective and multiple solutions. One of the major challenges that the sector faces is that it is underfunded and deprived of the resources.

It is against this background that the Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) decided to host the first Association for African Higher Education Financing Agencies (AAHEFA) international conference on higher education financing. The conference was held from 24th to 26th September 2018 at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) under the theme “Innovatively Financing Higher Education for the jobs of tomorrow”.
